Brazil reports record-low Amazon deforestation ahead of presidential runoff

Al Jazeera

Brazil’s official satellite-monitoring agency says Amazon forest clearance fell 42% year over year to 3,335 square kilometres in the 12 months through July, the lowest level since records began in 1988. The decline gives President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva an environmental achievement before an October 25 runoff, while enforcement and future policy remain contested. Deforestation in the Cerrado also reached a record low, falling 24% to 5,517 square kilometres.

What matters

  • The latest Amazon total is 71.2% below the level recorded four years earlier.
  • AFP attributes the decline to greater monitoring and tougher penalties for illegal logging.
  • Lula has pledged to eliminate illegal deforestation by 2030.
  • Lula faces Flavio Bolsonaro, whose platform also promises to end illegal deforestation but proposes different enforcement priorities.

Context & caveats

  • The figures cover August through July and measure forest clearance, not all forms of environmental degradation.
