Shopify’s native-app migration shows how coding agents change platform economics

Shopify moved its Shop app from React Native to native Swift and Kotlin after coding-agent prototypes reduced the cost of maintaining separate platform implementations. The company chose a greenfield rebuild and used Helix to divide work into reviewable checkpoints backed by behavioral, visual and adversarial tests. Shopify reports faster startup, fewer Android megabytes and improved crash-free sessions after shipping the native app in 12 weeks. The results reflect Shopify’s architecture and process, so they do not establish that every team should abandon cross-platform development.
